Cardicuno is a card game store located in Stuttgart, Southern Germany. We have spoken to one of the owners, Cetin Yildirim!
Cetin, first question: Do you play Pokémon?
Hell yeah, I LOVE POKEMON! –>That’s the right answer, otherwise we would have stopped right here (kidding!).
What attracted you to become a part of the Play! Pokémon Team Challenge?
It is a great opportunity for us to stay in touch with our Community no matter what and doing our part for the Pokémon Organized Play in our region.
How has your community responded to the idea of a digital Play! Pokémon event?
Everybody is very thankful to play a tournament and get a chance to stay connected .
How long have you been running Pokémon events?
We as store run events since 2017. We have been involved in Pokémon Organized Play personally since 2003 and – you can tell – we love it.
Why did you choose Pokémon as one of the games for your store?
Pokémon was our hobby back when we were young kids, it was always connection point for us. One of the benefits to play this game is to get to know so many great people both from your area and from all over the world, so traveling is a benefit as well!
Our Dream for Cardicuno was to open our own store, to give something back and keep that flame burning and transport the passion and open-minded setting into our own Store. Finally, in 2017 this became reality.
Do you run a lot of other Organised Play in your store?
We are doing 3 major brands.
Why do you run OP?
As stated above we are very active also on private base in the Community therefore it is a must to give also something to our own Location/Store.
How are you currently keeping in touch with your community?
Discord, Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp and if possible, also with Social Distance at our Store. If players need to talk, they are always welcome.
Have you run digital tournaments before? / Have you been running other digital/online OP this year? / Would you consider running digital/online OP alongside normal OP in the future?
Yes, we did run Online Tournaments for Yu-Gi-Oh! during the Pandemic. Right now, running digital tournaments as a store is a great possibility to stay connected, however it lacks the experience of personal interaction. So, for the future I want to have the crowd back in-store!
How has the current situation affected your business? Did you move a lot of things online?
It was a learning lesson for us that nothing be granted, we need to develop ourselves and needed to spend more time for a transformation into a bigger online portfolio.
But we also look forward to getting back our regular brick and mortar store with all the people coming along and bringing back their smile and enjoy while shopping Trading Cards.
Were you happy with the registration/sign-up process for the Team Challenge?
Yes, the process was very smooth and straight forward for us. But we already knew RK9 labs and Discord, so that was not new to us.
Have you already run your first event?
Our first Play! Pokémon Team Challenge tournament will be on Friday, December 12th and we are already very excited
What could we improve to offer you a better experience if we were to do another event series like the Team Challenge?
We would love to see a chance for the younger Age Divisions, however we know that’s a very difficult task
Summarise your Team Challenge experience up to now in one sentence.
Happy that Organised Play is coming back, even though it is online for the moment.
How do you contribute to the Pokémon Volunteer Program, the Professor program?
We as store owners are highly active professors, and we try to help the organizers running the bigger events in any way we can.
Why should a player/parent participate in the Pokémon Professor program?
You are part of something awesome, as a parent it is easy you probably see already the joy of your own children enjoying Pokémon. Being part of that program, you are the pillar to make a lot more people happy and helping them to enjoy their Hobby at fullest
What are your hopes for 2021?
Being in an Event Hall with 1000 other players and announce: “Pokémon Players, Welcome to your Round 1 YOU MAY BEGIN!!
What are your expectations for 2021?
That we will be able to get back to at least a bit normal life
Give us a bit of advice/wisdom/hope for other stores out there 🙂
The hope is always look forward never back, never forget the smiling faces who run into your store all of them are waiting while doing their part to stop this crisis. That smiling faces want to be back in YOUR store so be prepared when they come back to your big party!
